Client Portfolio: Beaverton Foods

Shur Architects was the Project Architect for this new 82,500 square foot building on a 6.71 acre site in Hillsboro. The facility includes a two-story office and employee area, with a portion of the space designated for administrative offices and a portion for employee amenities such as kitchens, cafeteria, locker rooms and break areas.

Two individual production areas were designed to accommodate mustard and horseradish, the company’s two main products. Special consideration was also required in order to meet USDA food-grade specifications. Raw materials come into the facility unprocessed and need to be cleaned and grated on-site before they are transformed into the finished product. A root cooler, a spice room, and recycling areas for waste products are also integral to the design.

Separate receiving and shipping areas create an efficient Just-In-Time floor layout. Receiving multiple raw agricultural products on the north end of the factory and shipping finished processed and goods at the South end creates a Cross-docking Effect.

Other features of the new design include a special process kitchen, where product testing and development occurs, and a laboratory with demonstration areas. These will enable the company to continue developing new varieties of the same high-end products already enjoyed by connoisseurs all over the United States.
